​Between November 30th - December 12th, the 28th UNFCCC Conference of Parties (aka COP 28) will be held in Dubai, UAE. This year's conference represents a high stakes moment for the global carbon removals sector, coinciding with the latter's rapid growth and increased profile and scrutiny in the public sphere, and multiple parallel and highly consequential policy developments unfolding all over world.

​A stage of this magnitude creates both opportunities and risks for our sector. Collectively, we must work together to tell our own story, and project a vision for large-scale carbon removal that is rooted in science, technically and economically viable, safe, fair, diverse, and consistent with a prosperous and ecologically secure future.

​Join coalition members Rethinking Removals, the U.N. Climate Change High Level Champions, and the Carbon Business Council for this one hour zoom workshop. Moderators will cover concrete actions and roles that individuals and organizations can take and fill before, during and after the conference, both on the ground in Dubai and virtually.

The science is clear. We need carbon removals as well as deep emissions reductions and adaptation to tackle global warming. There is no net zero without carbon removals. Decarbonization can (and should) get us most of the way to zero – but we need removals on a gigatonne scale by mid-century to balance those emissions that we are not able to eliminate.

Climeworks uses direct air capture technology to sequester carbon dioxide. Their pilot facility in Iceland has partnered with Carbfix to capture and store more than 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide in volcanic basalt rock. They also recently announced plans for a Kenyan Plant that will capture and store over a million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually in partnership with Great Carbon Valley.

Octavia Carbon is the Global South's first direct air capture (DAC) company. They plan to leverage Kenya's geothermal energy, geology, and talent to radically accelerate DAC down the cost curve and make Kenya the world's most cost-effective hub to build and deploy DAC machines by 2025.

Takachar-produced biochar already improves crop yields, while its operations are providing new rural livelihoods. It has the potential to remove 2.4 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide a year at scale.
